Let me clarify before you assume that I am great in the kitchen…I am not the best cook and neither am I a great baker, but I do love being in the kitchen. I have about a 20 to 30 minute drive (traffic dependent) from work to home and I often create awesome recipes in my head, but if you are expecting hot curries and other Indian dishes…I apologise. I like spice in moderation and I don’t like heat, so you will never need to sit with a boxful of tissues when you come over to dinner at my house.
Last year (2017), I had to be admitted into hospital the day after Mother’s Day for a facet block (this is what happens when you try to rescue flying gazebos and end up with a prolapsed disc…a story for another day). We had to pay an admitting fee, which was over R2000, so Roger tells me, as only he would….”I really hope you enjoy your Mother’s Day lunch, because it certainly didn’t come cheap”. So in a nutshell, I would never complain if I ate hospital food every day. Some may call it bland, but I actually enjoy tasting the individual items on my plate and enjoying the various almost natural flavours…
I also like simple meals that are prepared in the shortest possible time, because to be honest we are so rushed these
days that you cannot really afford to spend hours preparing meals, so I will leave more complicated meals for the weekend. My gran is my craft and cooking inspiration – she is amazing because almost everything she did was self-taught. I say did, because these days her short-term memory is really bad, so she doesn’t cook or craft anymore, although she will still be able to tell you exactly how to make various dishes. I lived with my gran until I was about 8 years old and I remember the delicious cakes that had a pink swirls, a samoosa that you bit into expecting something savoury, but was sweet because it was filled with sugar and coconut, the smell of bread… mmmmmmm there is nothing that beats the that yeasty smell of bread baking. She also made a fried biscuit with sesame seeds and the most awesome pecan biscuits and her cooking was amazing – never with heat just really full of flavour. These are the sorts of recipes I would like to share, as well as my own crazy concoctions…. I hope you will enjoy the time spent in my kitchen….Welcome!!!
