After the crazy mayhem of 2019, we are now starting to wind down and look forward to a period of rest and relaxation. All projects that require focus and attention are put aside, but your hands have become accustomed to working on something, that you long for your hook and yarn. Perhaps you are travelling to your holiday destination and just need something to do on the journey…well, this is the project for this time of the year. It uses very easy stitches that require zero concentration. The repeats are fairly simple that you don’t have to sit with the pattern in front of you, and the colour changes are minimal.
So, the name Mattalia comes from Matthew and Atalia, my gorgeous kids who want the same of everything despite the age gap of over 3 years. This is a gender-neutral pattern, so they each can have one in colours of their choice. There are no puff stitches or clusters or anything floral – just plain stitches.
This pattern is for a blanket that measures about 150cm x 150cm, but you can make smaller baby blankets or simply continue with the repeats to make it bigger. It’s a very versatile pattern.

What would you need?
I would recommend 3 colours. The pattern is not suited to a yarn cake, because some of the stitch definition is enhanced by the use of two different colours. Have a look at my pic above. Choose the two colours that contrast well for those sections where the colour change takes place after each round. That being said, a single colour may also work well.
The yarn I used is Stylecraft Special DK and the blanket is made up using a 4mm hook.
Colour A: Denim x 4 (100g balls)
Colour B: Cloud Blue x 4 (100g balls)
Colour C: Silver x 4 (100g balls)
Check the length of the yarn you choose to use – Stylecraft Special DK measures 295 metres per ball and 12 balls is enough to complete this blanket. I don’t crochet tightly.
This pattern is for a blanket that measures just over 150cm x 150cm, but you can make smaller baby blankets or simply continue with the repeats to make it bigger. It’s a very versatile pattern. This would also make an awesome lap blanket.

To get started
With a 4 mm hook make 4ch and sl st into the 1st ch to form a ring. Alternatively, you can start with a magic ring/circle. I always prefer a double magic ring, as I feel this is somewhat stronger. Please remember to work away the initial tail very securely. You do not want your work to unravel.
Round 1: Colour A
Ch3 (this counts as the 1st st), 2dc into the ring,
(ch2, 3dc into the ring) 3 times.
Join to the top of the beg ch3 with a hdc. Alternatively, ch2 and sl st in the beginning ch3 – use a method that you prefer, however see note above about the starting point for the next round. DO NOT FASTEN OFF.
Round 2: Colour A
Ch2 (to count as the 1st st), 1hdc the same sp (half of first corner made)

Join in any ch-2 corner sp, ch1 (to count as the 1st st) OR st-sc in this sp, 2sc in the same sp,
*do not sk the 1st hidden st, 1sc in each of the next 257 sts,
3sc in the ch-2 corner space*,
Repeat from * to * 3 more times. On the last repeat omit the (3sc) in the ch-2 corner sp and work sl st in the beg ch1 or st-sc. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
