This is a simple, easy repeat pattern that is so versatile in that it can be worked in any type yarn or hook size and in a single or as many colours you wish to use. Once you understand the repeats, you won’t need to refer to this pattern sheet for guidance. I call this project your “sit in front of the TV” project. The front post stitch creates a lovely ridged effect making this a wonderful textured blanket. This would also be awesome as a playmat for babies and depending on the yarn used, you could even make rugs.
You can purchase an ad free pattern from Ravelry, which will include instructions for both the square and rectangular version of the blanket.
MATERIALS
Chunky yarn, 8mm hook (or a size to suit your yarn), needle for sewing away ends. For the 1m x 1m Square Version, I used approximately 6 balls of 100g (150m) chunky yarn, but you can adjust the pattern as you see fit to any size you want.
THE SQUARE VERSION
To get started
With a 8mm (or whatever size you are using) hook make 4ch sl st into the 1st ch to form a ring. Alternatively, you can start with a magic ring/circle. I always prefer a double magic ring, as I feel this is somewhat stronger. Please remember to work away the initial tail very securely. You do not want your work to unravel.
Round 1:
Ch3 (this counts as the 1st st), 2dc into the ring, (ch2, 3dc into the ring) 3 times, ch2, sl st in the beg ch3 OR hdc in the beg ch3.
Round 2:
Ch2 (to count as the 1st st) OR st-hdc in any ch-2 corner sp, 2hdc in the same sp (half of 1st corner made),
[sk st fpdc around the centre st of the group of 3dc, sk st (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) in the ch-2 corner sp 4 times. On the last repeat, omit the (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) corner, 3hdc, ch2 and sl st in the beg st OR 1hdc in the beg st.
Round 3:
Ch2 (to count as the 1st st) OR st-hdc in any ch-2 corner sp, 2hdc in the same sp (half of 1st corner made),
[fpdc around the centre st of the grp of 3hdc (your corner from the previous round), V st in the fpdc from the previous round, fpdc around the centre st of the grp of 3hdc, (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) in the ch-2 corner sp] 4 times. On the last repeat, omit the (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) corner, 3hdc, ch2 and sl st in the beg st OR 1hdc in the beg st.
Round 4:
Ch2 (to count as the 1st st) OR st-hdc in any ch-2 corner sp, 2hdc in the same sp (half of 1st corner made),
[fpdc around the centre st of the grp of 3hdc (your corner from the previous round), fpdc around the fpdc from the previous round, V st in V st from the previous round, fpdc around the fpdc from the previous round, fpdc around the centre st of the grp of 3hdc, (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) in the ch-2 corner sp] 4 times. On the last repeat, omit the (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) corner, 3hdc, ch2 and sl st in the beg st OR 1hdc in the beg st.
Round 5:
Ch2 (to count as the 1st st) OR st-hdc in any ch-2 corner sp, 2hdc in the same sp (half of 1st corner made),
[fpdc around the centre st of the grp of 3hdc (your corner from the previous round), Vst in the fpdc, fpdc around the fpdc from the previous round, V st in V st, fpdc around the fpdc from the previous round, Vst in the fpdc, fpdc around the centre st of the grp of 3hdc, (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) in the ch-2 corner sp] 4 times. On the last repeat, omit the (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) corner, 3hdc, ch2 and sl st in the beg st OR 1hdc in the beg st.
Rounds 4 and 5 are essentially your patterns repeats for this square/blanket/ throw. To help you understand the pattern better, I will include the pattern write-up for Round 6. You will note its very similar to Round 4 and its simply the number of repeats that change – see bold text in brackets below that changes on each round. Essentially on each round you will have a V st between 2fpdc. New V sts are created in the fpdc sts that are created on the previous round.
Round 6:
Ch2 (to count as the 1st st) OR st-hdc in any ch-2 corner sp, 2hdc in the same sp (half of 1st corner made),
[fpdc around the centre st of the grp of 3hdc (your corner from the previous round), (fpdc around the fpdc from the previous round, V st in V st from the previous round) 3 times, (fpdc around the fpdc from the previous round, fpdc around the centre st of the grp of 3hdc, (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) in the ch-2 corner sp] 4 times. On the last repeat, omit the (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) corner, 3hdc, ch2 and sl st in the beg st OR 1hdc in the beg st.
Okay let me help you once more and give you Round 7 – you will see its pretty much the same as Round 5
Round 7:
Ch2 (to count as the 1st st) OR st-hdc in any ch-2 corner sp, 2hdc in the same sp (half of 1st corner made),
[fpdc around the centre st of the grp of 3hdc (your corner from the previous round), Vst in the fpdc, (fpdc around the fpdc from the previous round, V st in the V st) 3 times, fpdc around the fpdc, V st in the fpdc, fpdc around the centre st of the group of 3hdc, (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) in the ch-2 corner sp] 4 times. On the last repeat, omit the (3hdc, ch2, 3hdc) corner, 3hdc, ch2 and sl st in the beg st OR 1hdc in the beg st.
After a few rounds, you will get the hang of the pattern and you wouldn’t have to refer to this pattern sheet for further guidance.
THE BORDER
I chose a really simple border to both offset and complement the textured pattern. As the size and therefore the number of rounds worked is dependent on the shape and size you choose, stitch counts are not provided.
Round 1:
Ch1 (this does not count as a st), 3sc in any ch-2 corner sp OR st-sc, 2sc in any ch-2 corner sp (1st corner worked),
(1sc in each st to the ch-2 corner sp, 3sc in the ch-2 corner sp) 4 times. On the last repeat omit the 3sc in the ch-2 corner sp and sl st in the 1st sc or st-sc.
Round 2:
Ch2 (this counts as the 1st st) OR st-hdc in the centre sc of any grp of corner 3sc, (half of 1st corner made),
(1hdc blo in each st to the centre sc of the 3sc corner, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in the centre sc of the corner group of 3sc) 4 times. On the least repeat omit the (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) corner, 2hdc, ch2 and sl in the beg st OR 2hdc, hdc in the beg st.
Round 3:
Ch2 (this counts as the 1st st) OR st-hdc in any ch-2 corner sp (half of 1st corner made),
(1hdc blo in each st to the ch-2 corner sp, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in the ch-2 corner sp) 4 times. On the last repeat omit the (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) corner, 2hdc, ch2 and sl in the beg st OR 2hdc, hdc in the beg st.
You can repeat Round 3 if you wish to create a wide border.
Once complete, fasten off and weave in all your ends.
Thank you to my awesome testers Cynthia Sheblom, Kim Lategan, Lynn Laing, Monika Mackenzie and Roxan Zumani – this would not have been possible had it not been for your support!
