The Impi Aneesa Mandala
CAL starts on Wednesday 25 September 2019
Aneesa “Impi” Moola will always be remembered for her courage and fierce determination to succeed against all odds. Sadly, she passed on, on 7 August 2019. She was just 26 years old. Despite being so young, Aneesa has always been and will continue to be a source of inspiration for so many of the people she encountered.
Aneesa was a brave warrior who endured so much pain through her numerous surgeries and hospital admissions and still managed to smile through all of this. She was an absolute inspiration to so many people.
In 2016 Aneesa decided to commemorate her surgeries (42 then) by designing a 42-round mandala. Unfortunately, she didn’t get too far, because Aneesa like many of us was great at starting projects and not seeing them through. The centre of this mandala was from the Nessa square I created some years ago, so this project was something I just had to do. As at 4 June 2019, Aneesa had a total of 47 surgeries.
I hadn’t conceived how big this project would be. My initial plan was a mandala wall hanging – a dream catcher of sorts. I finished the last stitch on Round 47 and stared at this giant circle in amazement – it gave meaning to what Aneesa had to go through starting when she was just 6 weeks old. I know that Aneesa would have wanted her mandala to be functional and not just pretty, so I turned this mandala into a blanket.
This project is called THE IMPI ANEESA MANDALA because Aneesa was an absolute fan of Johnny Clegg and added “Impi” to her name, which translated means warrior. And as each round of the mandala signifies a surgery endured and a battle won – it could only be called Impi!
“Impi! Wo nans impi yeza
Obani bengathinta amabubesi!
Here comes the army who can touch the lions”
You will only need to purchase the pattern once. All additions to, and variations of this pattern will thereafter be made available to you as we publish them. You will have the option to make a mandala wall hanging, mandala throw and a blanket.
Why purchase this pattern?
All proceeds from the sale of this pattern during this CAL will be donated in memory of Aneesa “Impi” Moola to the Smile Foundation. Aneesa was a huge supporter of the Smile Foundation, which is a South African NPO that assists children with any type of facial abnormality to receive correct Plastic and Reconstructive surgery within South Africa. They help children who suffer from treatable facial deformities such as Cleft Lip Palate, burn victims, Moebius syndrome (facial paralysis) and other conditions. Please read my blog post (coming soon) for more information, including some of Aneesa’s posts on this subject.
Please support our project, by purchasing the pattern. Yarn kits are also available for purchase.
We celebrate the brave warrior that Aneesa was – let’s help realise her dream of helping as many children with similar issues that she faced to get the treatment they deserve.
Rest in peace brave warrior – until we meet again!
The Impi Aneesa Mandala CAL will launch on 25 September 2019. Once you have purchased the CAL you will receive each part via email.
