Happy New Year
A very Happy New Year to you! I begin each year with great intentions of being a regular blogger and plans to share all things creative with you over the year, but life often gets the better of me. I didn’t do very well in this regard last year, but will try to do better in 2020. Before we chat about the year ahead, lets look back and see what we did last year. In March 2019, Atalia’s Star was released as part of the Friends Around the World CAL 2018, coinciding with Atalia’s first birthday. I had meant to turn this into a cushion cover, but not go around to doing it yet, so another one to add to the list of projects to complete. You can find the pattern here: https://creativekogi.com/pattern/atalias-star/.
Feeling a bit sorry for myself because of a sore arm, I didn’t do much crocheting for the first half of the year, although I managed to finish a page of cross stitching of a very large design and started stitching a very scary dinosaur for Matthew (yet to be finished). By July I missed crocheting and decided it was time to start again. I wanted to ease into it by doing a very simple C2C blanket, but was quickly bored, so I decided to create a sampler blanket – just a simple blanket with panels of various stitches put together, mostly double crochet. This is a unisex blanket therefore called Alex. This pattern is scheduled to be released in January this year, as its currently being tested. Although Alex was started first it was the last to be completed in 2019.
On 7 August 2019, Aneesa Moola a dear friend and fellow crocheter passed on and in her memory the Impi Aneesa Mandala began to form. I’m not really sure how the pattern grew, I literally just worked one round after the other and it took shape – this pattern is available here : https://creativekogi.com/pattern/the-impi-aneesa-mandala/. During the 9-week CAL we raised R20000 (twenty thousand rands) for the Smile Foundation, a charity that Aneesa supported. Read more about the Smile Foundation here: https://smilefoundationsa.org/
I didn’t realise how much work when into a CAL until I embarked on this, but I’ve learnt so much through the process including how to make videos and upload to YouTube. My channel can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDIQyONx_yr5T0-tg68dhbw. I would love to get to 1000 subscribers, of course I understand also that I need to be actively contributing to the channel too – that is a plan for 2020! Please have a look and subscribe.
After the Impi Aneesa Mandala Blanket, I wanted to create a simple holiday project for you and Mattalia was born, named after my children Matthew and Atalia. The pattern is created by a simple play on stitches and colours. You can find Mattalia here: https://creativekogi.com/pattern/mattalia/
Kim Lategan who is a very dear friend and one of my awesome testers reminded me that Alex was still sitting in her WIP pile and needed to be finished. So, a big thank you to Kim for keeping me on my toes, Alex was completed before the new year. I will share more with you within the next 2 weeks.
I’m excited to be contributing to the Friends Around the World CAL again this year, and quite excited about the square I created, but unfortunately can’t share any pics with you just yet. Its all top secret for the moment.
2019 was a difficult year and amidst all lows, there were certainly some highs – your response to the CAL was overwhelming. I want to extend a special thank you to those who not only bought the pattern but also contributed generously using the donation tab and of course to the Anja Blokkies Trooskomberse crochet group for inviting me to speak at their year end function and donating R3000 to the cause.
Creative Kogi is however, not just about crocheting. I want to try everything, and do everything. I am one of those people who can never seem to sit and do nothing, although I will be making special effort this year to take time out and try things like journaling and teaching myself to just enjoy doing nothing. One of my newest projects is diamond painting (https://diamondpainting.co.za) and I am currently working on this:
I love love love this and can’t get enough of this. I have a few more designs that I want to start, and I have to keep reminding myself to finish one project in its entirety before starting another. This actually works up pretty quickly, but also because I get super engrossed that I don’t realise I had been sitting working on it for a few hours.
What’s planned for 2020? Perhaps another CAL? Ummmm well, I will have to do another newsletter to share more details. My arm is slowly being twisted in that direction, but no promises just yet.
I am looking forward to an awesome year ahead and hope to be more active and interactive as we all Create, Craft and Inspire together.
